What to Expect During A Themed Birthday Session

Marsha Baylor

Marsha is a Kansas City Newborn Photographer specializing in the creation of fine art pieces capturing the fleeting moments of babies' first year.

A Themed birthday session is my favorite kind of session. They take a lot of coordination and imagination but are so worth it. Many parents ask me what they should bring, wear, and expect and honestly, I love answering these questions! It gives me a chance to tell them what makes me different than other photographers when it comes to how I run my business.

Here is a snapshot of what you should expect going into a themed session with me.

What should you bring?

Unless there is a little something special that you would like to incorporate into the session, you don’t need to bring anything except yourself and your baby! I provide everything needed for the session. From props to outfits and cake, there is nothing that you need to worry about other than showing up. I want my clients to be relaxed and enjoy our time together. Having kids is already stressful, my job isn’t to add to that.

What kind of themed sessions do you do?

Great question! The short answer is, a themed birthday session can be anything our imaginations can conjure up! Most of my first birthday sessions are cake themed, but that doesn’t mean it has to be. Recently, I did a Kansas City BBQ Themed session. Ribs were brought in; picnic décor was put out and we had a great time. We displayed some of Kansas City’s most beloved brands of BBQ sauce. Zarda, Jack Stack, Gates, and Arthur Bryants went head to head, but ultimately the tiny tot won for cuteness alone.

Speaking of cake, what should we expect?

I work with two of the best bakers in Kansas City (in my humble opinion). They create some of the best (and tastiest) cakes I’ve ever had. I can accommodate allergies, sensitivities and just standard cakes. Scherer Girl Cakes specializes in cakes for those that have food allergies or special requirements. If there is a need, she can make it happen and make it taste good. No more cardboard cakes! Sugar and Spice is a Parkville local and favorite. Their designs are beautiful, and their cakes are delicious.

Most people don’t think about it, but if their baby hasn’t ever had cake before, they will probably be apprehensive to trying it. It’s like broccoli. I’m still apprehensive with broccoli. I make sure that my clients introduce something with frosting on it prior to our session. If baby is familiar, they will be more likely to dig in thus giving us the super cute messy baby face.

Is there anything else?

Yes! When I found my space, one of the selling points was that it has a fully functional shower in the bathroom. I don’t want my themed birthday session kids to leave sticky and uncomfortable, so I provide baby wash, clean towels, and lotion for you to wash you little one off prior to leaving. No matter what the session, my goal is to make sure that everyone has an experience that will leave them wanting to come back. If parents leave calm, yet excited for their photos then I know I’ve done my best job.
